1. Policy Statement
At Engineering for Kids Chelmsford, we operate a No Parent in Class policy across all of our sessions, including Saturday Club, After School Club, Camps, Workshops, and Home Education classes.
This means that once a child has been signed in by their parent or guardian, parents and guardians are asked to leave the session space and wait in a designated waiting area or return at the agreed collection time.
Our Commitment
We understand that dropping off your child — especially for the first time — can feel daunting. Please know that this policy is not designed to exclude you. It is in place because we genuinely believe it creates the very best learning experience for every child in our care.
Our instructors are fully trained, DBS checked, and experienced in working with children of all ages and abilities. Your child is in safe, capable hands.
2. Why We Have This Policy
Our No Parent in Class policy is built on years of experience delivering STEM education to children and reflects best practice across children’s enrichment and educational settings. There are six key reasons for this policy.
2.1 Children Settle Faster and More Confidently Without Parents Present
Research in child development consistently shows that children adapt more quickly to new environments when parents step back. When a parent remains in the room, a child’s attention naturally stays anchored to them, making it harder to engage with the instructor, the activity, and other children.
Once a parent leaves, most children relax into the session within minutes, forming connections with their peers and their instructor on their own terms.
A child who might appear anxious at drop-off will often surprise their parent with how quickly they settle in. We see this every week.
2.2 It Encourages Independence and Resilience
One of the greatest gifts we can give children is the confidence to try something new independently. Our sessions are designed to be challenging, creative, and occasionally uncertain — because that is where real learning happens.
When a parent is watching, children are more likely to look for reassurance before attempting something and less likely to take the creative risks that lead to breakthroughs.
By encouraging children to navigate the session independently, we help build resilience, problem-solving confidence, and self-belief that will benefit them throughout life.
2.3 It Creates a More Focused Learning Environment
Our sessions are active, hands-on, and instructor-led. When parents are present in the room, the dynamic changes for the children, the instructor, and sometimes for other families.
Children may feel self-conscious, perform rather than explore, or become distracted by interactions between parents and instructors.
Keeping the session space exclusively for students and staff allows instructors to give their full attention to the children and maintain the pace and energy of the lesson.
2.4 It Supports Safeguarding Best Practice
Engineering for Kids Chelmsford takes safeguarding extremely seriously. All staff hold Enhanced DBS checks, are trained in safeguarding, and operate within clear child protection guidelines.
Limiting access to the session space to vetted, trained staff is a fundamental safeguarding measure. It ensures we always know who is in the room with our students.
2.5 It Helps Every Child Feel Equal
Children are perceptive. In a room where some children have a parent present and others do not, those without a parent can feel less supported, while those with a parent may feel singled out.
Our policy ensures every child arrives on the same footing — independent, part of the group, and equal.
2.6 It Respects the Professional Expertise of Our Instructors
Our instructors are trained professionals who have invested significant time learning how to deliver engaging, safe, and effective sessions.
Having parents in the room can unintentionally undermine the instructor’s authority and focus. Our policy ensures that during session time the instructor is the trusted adult in the room.
In Summary
Our No Parent in Class policy exists because:
-
Children settle faster and build independence more effectively without parents present
-
It creates a focused, equal, and professional learning environment
-
It is an important safeguarding measure
-
It helps every child feel equally included
-
It respects the expertise and authority of our instructors
3. How Drop-Off and Collection Works
We want drop-off and collection to be smooth and consistent each week.
Arrival
Bring your child to the session entrance at or just before the start time. Our instructor will welcome them.
Sign-In
Your child is signed in on our register. Please ensure we have your current contact number.
Handover
Once signed in, parents and guardians are asked to say goodbye at the door and leave the session area.
During the Session
Parents may wait in the designated waiting area, go to a nearby location, or return at collection time.
Collection
Return at the published end time. Your child will only be released to an authorised adult. Please have ID available if collecting on behalf of a parent or guardian.
Sign-Out
Your child must be signed out before leaving.
First Session Nerves
If your child is attending for the first time and is feeling anxious, please let our instructor know at the door. We are experienced at welcoming nervous children and will give them extra attention during the settling-in period.
In our experience, the vast majority of children are happily engaged within five minutes of a parent leaving.
4. Special Circumstances — When a Parent May Be Permitted to Stay
We recognise that flexibility is sometimes necessary. In certain circumstances a parent may remain in or near the session space. These situations are exceptions and must be agreed in advance.
4.1 Children with Additional Needs or Disabilities
Where a child has a diagnosis, additional learning need, or disability requiring parental support, we will work collaboratively with the family.
Possible arrangements may include:
-
A parent or support worker remaining in the room quietly
-
A gradual transition plan across several sessions
-
Adjustments to minimise disruption to other children
Parents should disclose relevant needs during enrolment so we can plan appropriately.
4.2 First Session for Very Young or Highly Anxious Children
In some cases, a parent may remain quietly at the edge of the room for the first session only.
Conditions include:
-
Agreement with the instructor in advance
-
The parent remains seated and does not participate
-
A clear transition plan for future sessions
4.3 Medical or Emergency Requirements
If a child has a medical condition requiring a parent or carer nearby, they may remain on the premises.
In these cases:
-
Medical information must be shared beforehand
-
The parent waits in the designated waiting area
-
They enter the session space only if required for medical reasons
4.4 Trial Sessions for Very Young or Non-Verbal Children
For some trial sessions, parents may observe quietly for part of the session to determine whether the environment is suitable.
This is a one-time arrangement only.
4.5 Volunteering or Assisting at Events
Occasionally parents may be invited to assist at specific events or demonstrations. Any role will be defined in advance and may require a DBS check.
